Swift and Monell Stools
Set of five rare leather and iron stools, designed by Lila Swift and Donald Monell, Gloucester, Massachusetts, circa 1950s. Each stool features a seat composed of hand-woven leather straps, tensioned with cord and secured by an iron ring beneath the frame. The minimal wrought-iron tripod base is both sturdy and elegant, its slender profile contrasting with the tactile woven leather above. The surfaces carry a well-aged patina, with the leather showing rich tonal variation.
These stools are notable examples of the mid-century American studio craft movement.. Swift and Monellβs work embodies the eraβs interest in artisanal processes, natural materials, and modest yet inventive construction. The combination of woven leather and forged iron gives the stools both durability and a raw, textural beauty.
