Ray Komai Plywood Chair

$2,400.00

Ebonized chair designed by Ray Komai, produced by J.G. Furniture Company in 1949. Exhibited in the U.S. Pavilion at the 1951 Milan Triennale and included in MoMA’s collection, this innovative design showcases Komai’s sculptural approach to molded plywood. The ebonized seat, with its signature split back joined by a metal detail, has a playful, ebullient quality. The organic, swooping lines of the plywood seat contrast elegantly with the industrial chrome-plated steel base. An uncommon example, this historically significant chair has a distinctive presence. Some wear is visible at the legs, consistent with age.

Designer: Ray Komai

Manufacturer: J.G. Furniture Company

Origin: United States
