Eames Time Life Stools
Grouping of original Time Life Stools, Model B, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, 1960. Acquired together as a set of three, these stools were created for the lobby of the Time Life Building in New York. Turned from solid walnut, the Model B is sometimes called the “chess piece,” with stacked concave and convex profiles that give it the presence of a column. Ray Eames’s sculptural training is evident in the rhythmic play of this form. Unlike the Eameses’ plywood or fiberglass chairs that emphasized industrial process, the Time Life Stools highlight shape and material, with each stool showing a distinctive mosaic end-grain pattern. Original examples, like these, often show fine hairline splits across the seat surface from the movement of solid walnut. Polished and cleaned, the stools present in excellent condition.
